The Binary Totient Series

Erdős #249 By July 2026; revised 1 October 2026 Authorship, AI use and citation

Summary. The dyadic totient sections through level e≥1 have an explicit rational basis of size 2e+1. Truncating a scaled tail difference produces an integer whose residue certifies nonintegrality when its distances from both endpoints of the residue interval exceed an explicit error bound. The record develops the resulting finite denominator exclusions, equivalent residue criteria, and sufficient exponential-sum estimates. Rational comparison sequences identify the limitations of particular size, parity, rank, and finite-prefix arguments. The short paper supplies the all-base basis theorem; here each conditional result carries the arithmetic hypothesis still needed to apply it. Those hypotheses are not established in the form required to prove irrationality of S=∑ φ(n)2−n.

This paper covers a claim-bounded problem-specific reasoning surface for Erdős #249: selected checked premises, finite certificates, closed routes, surviving obligations, and their exact evidence bands.

It does not establish the validity of claims tagged Lean, which belongs to the cited kernel-checked source, or a solution to Erdős #249, which remains open.

Limits of specific reductions and estimates

We test several proposed deductions by retaining their assumptions and changing the conclusion. The constructions concern specified congruences, recurrences or estimates, so their force is limited to the corresponding deductions.

Proposition 2.7 (Three particular equivalences).

  1. Certificate completeness. The complete residue tests considered here are equivalent to the corresponding nonintegrality assertions. Rewriting the quantified condition using one of these equivalences does not weaken it.

  2. A selectable two-point sample. The condition is as follows. For every h≥1 and X0, choose X,L∈N with X≥max(X0,1) and 16(2X+h+L+2)≤2L, a nonempty set T⊆[X,2X)∩N, a set P⊆T×T of ordered pairs, and a real number δ≥0. With EN=exp⁡(2πiD(h,N,L)/2L), require

    |Ei−Ej|≥δ((i,j)∈P),2|T|25≤|P|δ2.

This condition is equivalent to irrationality. For the converse, irrationality and the doubling map allow T={N,N+1} and P={(N,N+1),(N+1,N)} at arbitrarily large N, with δ=9/10. The numerical requirement is then 8/5≤2(9/10)2. The freedom to select T matters: this is not an estimate on a sample prescribed in advance, such as all prime positions.

  3. Four integral tail differences. For H≥0 and positive integers p,q, the conjunction

    R2kH−RkH∈Z(k∈{1,p,q,pq})

is equivalent to R2H−RH∈Z alone. The affine transport identity for H↦kH preserves integrality, so the three additional conditions add no restriction. Neither p nor q need be prime.

These three equivalences explain why these particular reformulations retain the original arithmetic question. They do not rule out useful weaker intermediate lemmas. The full-block and fixed-margin conditions in §3 ask for additional quantitative information that the three arguments above do not supply.

Remark 2.8. Second-difference certificates need not occur at a smaller depth than first-difference certificates. At (h,N)=(1,8), the first-difference test holds at depth 8, whereas no second-difference certificate exists at a depth at most 8 (Proposition 6.55). This one example refutes a uniform claim that second differences always save depth; it does not give a uniform ordering in the opposite direction.

Separately, unbounded growth of the denominator exclusions produced by the Farey windows would imply irrationality. The record does not establish a converse for that specific sequence of windows, so the proposed growth condition is used only as a sufficient condition.

Proposition 2.9 (Failure of a specified two-adic congruence construction). A certificate requires the residue to lie farther than N+h+L+2 from either endpoint modulo 2L. In the specific construction below, the residue equals 2K−1 modulo 2K, but the defining congruence is p≡1+2K−1(mod2K). Hence p≥1+2K−1. At N=p−K, h=H, and L=K, the error bound is p+H+2>2K−1, so the residue does not satisfy the certificate inequalities. This calculation defeats this construction at every depth. It does not prove a corresponding statement for every use of the Chinese Remainder Theorem or every prescribed totient pattern.

Remark 2.10 (Two further prescribed patterns). Two related results concern particular prescribed patterns. Under the stated size condition, the complete terminal divisibility pattern is impossible: its last totient difference would be positive, below a modulus, and divisible by that modulus (Erdos249257.DiagonalFreshLossBridge.PowerTwoOddWindowAffine.not_actualLcmTerminalDyadicStaircase_of_room). For the pattern with the last condition removed, the penultimate difference is forced to be 2m−1, with 2m<2(2H+J+K+2).

A different sufficient condition would prescribe the accumulated sum rather than an individual difference: D(h,N,L)≡2L−1(mod2L) and 2L−1>N+h+L+2. These two inequalities would give a certificate. They have not been supplied at the required quantified scope. The failure of the earlier patterns does not prove that this replacement is necessary.

Proposition 2.11 (Information lost by specific carry descriptions).

  1. Fix m≥2 and write R=⌊(m+1)/2⌋. For r=0,…,R, let cr vanish except at cr(m)=R−r and cr(m+1)=2r. Each sequence satisfies 0≤cr(n)≤n, has the same binary sum R2−m, and has the same coefficients and scaled tails before position m. Its scaled tail at position m is r. The common history therefore does not determine that tail. A finite set of labels that determines the tail for each member of this family must contain at least R+1=⌊(m+1)/2⌋+1 elements, one for each value of r.

  2. Reduction modulo 2L forgets the initial value after the same L recurrence steps: two affine binary orbits with different seeds satisfy orbitu(L)−orbitv(L)=2L(u0−v0), so the endpoint residue mod 2L is independent of the initial carry.

  3. Fix a precision u≥1, a finite list of nonnegative valuations νj and odd integers aj, and an initial integer e0. There are integers zj such that

    cj=2νj(aj+2uzj),ej+1=2ej+cj,|ej+1|≤2νj+u−1.

At each step, choose the centred representative of 2ej+2νjaj modulo 2νj+u. The unrestricted integers zj are essential: the assertion does not prescribe the full coefficients cj.

These statements exclude decoders using only the specified common history, distinctions using only the endpoint residue, and contradictions using only the stated local symbols. They do not prove that the actual totient expansion cannot be studied by automata. A proposed application must verify that it uses no additional arithmetic information that the comparison families fail to preserve.

Proposition 2.12 (Four limits of particular linear constructions). The following four constructions have different limitations. They must not be read as a claim that every finite family of totient sections is independent: the full family has the explicit relations described in the short paper.

  1. Dyadic sections and an integer identity. The retained family of 2e+1 dyadic sections is linearly independent over Q for e≥1 (Proposition 1.6). Separately, positive integers Q,v and integers A,b cannot satisfy

    A≠0,QvA=b,|b|<Qv,

because |A|≥1 gives |b|≥Qv. This elementary incompatibility concerns the displayed requirements; it does not exclude every argument using an adjugate matrix.

  2. Möbius incidence. UN(i,j)=μ((i+1)/(j+1)) when (j+1)∣(i+1) and 0 otherwise is lower triangular with unit diagonal, so detUN=1 for every N. Hence multiplication by UN is injective; the corresponding coefficient transformation cannot create a nonzero vector in its kernel.

  3. Adjugate reconstruction. Let wi∈Q and xi∈N be finite families with ∑iwiφ(xi)=1. Reconstructing each value from two tails and bounding them separately gives the error bound ∑i|wi|(3xi+4). It is at least 3, since

    1≤∑i|wi|φ(xi)≤∑i|wi|xi.

Consequently this particular bound cannot be less than 1, whatever the size of the evaluation matrix.

  4. Finite combinations of shifts. The synthetic sequence in Observation 6.115 has the prescribed differences a(q−1)H−1=φ(H) for 2≤q<t, where H=lcm⁡(1,…,t). It is of the form ai=2ci−ci+1, and every finite integer combination of its shifts has the same form with a correspondingly shifted state. Thus these linear operations alone do not remove the compatible carry recurrence. Their uniform bounds depend on the absolute coefficient sum, as made explicit in that observation. The construction does not assert that ai equals the actual totient difference at other indices.

A further limitation concerns quotients of the finite sums t(Y,r)=∑d=1Yμ(d)/(2d−1)r. For e≥1 and Y≥4,

t(Y,e+2)2t(Y,2e+2)−(S−12)>1480.

The proof bounds each infinite sum ∑d≥1μ(d)/(2d−1)r, r≥3, between 1429/1512 and 1, and its truncation error after Y≥4 terms by 1/3584. Thus the lower bound holds for every stated pair e,Y, not just a finite list of computed examples. These results concern the listed matrices, estimates, and comparison sequence. The fourth item has the explicit construction and source theorem given in Observation 6.115. A different finite-dimensional argument, or one using further arithmetic assumptions, is not excluded. Proposition 1.7 is conditional on rationality of S and is not, by itself, a counterexample. The separate rational 5/4 comparison supplies the counterexample to the generic rank bound.

Proposition 2.13 (The coefficient properties of the rational example). The rational sequence in Proposition 1.9 satisfies uniform boundedness, c(n)≤n, agreement with φ(n) modulo 2 at every index, and the stated separated-carry form of aperiodicity. Consequently, those properties alone cannot imply irrationality of a dyadic series. The example does not exclude arguments using further totient identities, including its multiplicative relations.
