Reciprocal Mersenne Subseries

Summary. A weighted summability criterion proves irrationality of reciprocal Mersenne subseries: if h is the part of a supported on a finite nonempty prime set P, every infinite A with ∑ h(a)/(a(bh(a)−1)) finite has irrational ∑ (ba−1)−1. The base-two condition gives the conclusion at every integer base for every infinite subset, and permits an example with divergent reciprocal sum, while excluding full support and all odd exponents. The proof averages over a finite part of the support and over dyadic observation lengths. Erdős's weaker reciprocal-summable theorem is proved in full, and a common window extends both arguments to unions of weighted and positive-cover supports. Finite-denominator and achievement-set calculations formulate tests for the targets 1/2 and 1/21; those tests do not decide either target or the universal question. Prime support at base 2 and squarefree support at power-of-two bases are attributed as existing work.

This paper covers a claim-bounded problem-specific reasoning surface for Erdős #257: selected checked premises, finite computations, closed routes, surviving obligations, and their exact evidence bands.

It does not establish the validity of claims tagged Lean, which belongs to the cited kernel-checked source, or a solution to Erdős #257, whose universal and half-value questions remain open.

Two proof details and sources

The comparison of displacement atoms works for real bases: Δb,A(N)≤Δ2,A(N) whenever b≥2. To see this, cancel b−1 and differentiate ∑i<rbi/∑i<dbi. The numerator of the derivative is ∑i<r≤j<d(i−j)bi+j−1≤0. An integer base is needed only when the displacement is placed on a rational lattice.

For the scalar positive-cover cost, put z=log2⁡t. Direct differentiation of yz/(y−1) on 1<y≤2 gives

Ψ(t)=t(1≤t≤4),Ψ(t)=zz(z−1)z−1(t>4).

These two calculations supply the elementary details used in the short paper.

The original periodic and linear-independence papers of Luca and Tachiya are now distinguished from their later overview [14][15][3]. Their theorem formulations used here were read in the author-written overview; the two original publisher PDFs were not retrieved. Van Assche’s nonvanishing and small-linear-form argument for the full Lambert series [16] is a comparator for the missing upper-height control, not a result for arbitrary thinnings.

For achievement-set background, Hornich’s original bibliographic record [17] is separated from the exposition actually used here [4]. Głąb and Prus-Wiśniowski’s survey [18] provides a modern map of geometry and cardinality questions, not a rational-membership theorem for the present set.
