Paths in Polynomial Lemniscates: A Degree-Seven Counterexample and Radial Connections

Summary. The record gives the rational estimates and geometric proof for ani's degree-seven polynomial: every connected set in its strict unit lemniscate joining two roots has Hausdorff measure greater than two. It develops contained paths for trinomials, collinear roots and two sparse families. Ordinary analytic arguments for critical-value criteria retain their unformalised inputs beside the statements. Critical-value moments, counterexamples to prescribed paths and questions about flow-strip geometry complete the account. The one-polynomial formal statement and correspondence with the historical wording remain distinct.

This paper covers the exact geometry of ani's one-polynomial counterexample, proved positive families and critical-value arguments with their unformalised inputs identified; formal-statement status and historical correspondence remain owned by the claims registry.

It does not establish the validity of claims tagged Lean, which belongs to the cited kernel-checked source, or the current status of Erdős #1041, including the later one-polynomial Formal Conjectures path-image Hausdorff-length check and its unreviewed historical curve-length correspondence; those distinctions belong to docs/claims.json in the mathematics repository.

Unformalised remark: roots close to a regular polygon

Let f(z)=∏i=1n(z−ai), n≥2, with all |ai|≤1. Put ρi=|ai| and D=|disc⁡(f)|/nn. The Vandermonde determinant estimate says that, when D≥1−η and 0≤η≤1/(80n2),

1−ρi2≤nηn−1,|ai−aj|≥2−2η−nηn−1,

where the second inequality is for i≠j. Moreover, the roots lie within 7η of a rotated regular n-gon, after a bijection. These estimates come from near equality in Hadamard’s determinant inequality, as follows.

Take the Vandermonde matrix Vim=aim, 0≤m<n, and let G=VV∗, si=Gii=∑m=0n−1ρi2m and H=diag⁡(si−1/2)Gdiag⁡(si−1/2). The normalisation makes H positive semidefinite with diagonal entries one, and

D=detH∏isin.

Every factor is at most one by Hadamard’s inequality, so D≥1−η forces each factor to be at least 1−η. In particular,

(n−1)(1−ρi2)≤n−si≤nη.

Hadamard–Fischer applied to the {i,j} principal block gives detH≤1−|Hij|2, hence |Gij|≤nη. For t=aiaj―, the finite geometric sum then gives

nη≥|∑m=0n−1tm|≥n−n(n−1)2|1−t|.

Together with 1−t=1−ρj2+aj―(aj−ai), this proves the displayed separation bound. These two bounds need only 0≤η<1; the smaller range is used for the matching with a regular polygon.

For that matching, put κ=n2η/(n−1)≤1/80 and ui=ai/ρi. The radial bound gives ρi2n≥1−κ, while (1−t)Gij=1−tn gives |1−ainajn―|≤2nη for i≠j. Using |1−beiθ|2=(1−b)2+b|1−eiθ|2 with b=ρinρ1n≥1−κ, we obtain

|uin−u1n|≤2nη1−κ.

Choose the nearest nth-root phase to ui among u1e2πij/n. The inequality |eiθ−1|≥2|θ|/π for |θ|≤π shows that its distance from ai is at most

nηn−1+πη1−κ≤7η.

The separation bound exceeds 14η in the stated range, so two roots cannot be assigned the same phase. There are n roots and n phases, giving the required bijection. This ordinary argument uses standard determinant inequalities. It has no new Lean declaration, and no priority is claimed for the stability estimate.

The discriminant hypothesis D≥1−η with η≤1/(80n2) is stronger than closeness to the unit circle alone. The regular n-gon has D=1, whereas a configuration with a repeated root has D=0. In particular, radial information alone cannot supply this discriminant bound.

We next compare moduli pointwise on a specified segment. No ordering of complex polynomial values is involved. Write ak=ρkuk, with |uk|=1. Under D≥1−η and 0≤η≤1/(10n4), the same source proves

|f(sui)|≤∏k|sui−uk|(0≤s≤ρi).

The elementary step is

|sui−ρkuk|2−|sui−uk|2=(1−ρk)(2sℜ(uiuk―)−1−ρk).

Here is where the discriminant hypothesis enters. The two bounds just proved imply

|ai−ak|>1n−1 (i≠k),1−ρk≤nηn−1<1(n−1)2.

For k=i, the required inequality is 2s≤1+ρi, which follows from s≤ρi≤1. For k≠i, it is immediate if ℜ(uiuk―)≤0. Otherwise s≤ρi gives

ρk(2sℜ(uiuk―)−1−ρk)≤ρi2−ρk−|ai−ak|2≤1−ρk−|ai−ak|2<0.

Multiplying the factorwise inequalities proves the comparison. This argument uses the two elementary bounds, not the polygon-matching range; it therefore also covers n=2, when 1/(10n4)>1/(80n2). Moving the roots inward reduces this modulus bound, but does not select the angular directions of two contained segments.

For exact regular-polygon directions, write ai=ρiωζi, with |ω|=1 and ζ=e2πi/n. In any degree n≥2, the sufficient condition

0<ρk≤1,ρk≥2cos⁡(2π/n)−1for every k

makes the same factorwise comparison hold. Indeed, for k≠i with positive cosine, s≤1 gives 2sℜ(ζi−k)≤2cos⁡(2π/n)≤1+ρk; nonpositive cosines and k=i are handled as above. Since ∏k(z−ωζk)=zn−ωn, we obtain

|f(sωζi)|≤1−sn(0≤s≤ρi).

Every root-to-origin segment is therefore contained in {|f|≤1}. If all ρi<1, containment is strict: the displayed bound is below 1 for s>0, and |f(0)|=∏iρi<1. Any two roots can then be joined through the origin with length ρi+ρj<2. For 2≤n≤6 the lower bound on ρk is nonpositive, so every choice of positive radii at most one is allowed. For n≥7 the argument instead requires each radius to be at least 2cos⁡(2π/n)−1. This is a sufficient condition for the factorwise comparison, not a claimed necessary condition for a contained path. The favourable index in the general unit-circle averaging identity may move with s, however; an existence statement at one level does not supply a fixed pair of roots.
