Factorial Linear Forms and Denominators: Detailed Proofs and Rationality Criteria

Erdős #68 By 1 September 2026; revised 7 October 2026 Authorship, AI use and citation

Summary. The record proves liminf (log LN)/(N3/2 log N) ≥22/3 for L_N=lcm(2!−1,…,N!−1), by comparing a terminal block of denominators with pairwise gcds rather than an external multiplicity theorem. Specialising a Louwsma–Martino valuation, it exhibits primes 139 and 2593 absent from all later reduced denominators. Coefficient constructions give integer forms MS+k; at fixed moment the remainder changes only by an integer. Rationality criteria use factorial digits and the next integer above a scaled partial sum; the digit argument also recovers the irrationality of e. Two exact calculations give q∤299999! and q≥239990>1012038. These exclusions do not prove irrationality.

This paper covers the complete problem-specific reasoning surface for Erdős #68, including all registered result families and their boundaries.

It does not establish the validity of claims tagged Lean, which belongs to the cited kernel-checked source, or a solution to Erdős #68, which remains open.

A primitive solution on an arithmetic progression

We now separate two tasks that the basis classification alone does not combine: prescribe where support begins and make M absorb every fixed denominator as the support grows. Equal spacing turns each cancellation equation into a polynomial root condition. Scaling then makes the coefficients integral and the last coefficient equal to one. Let D,r≥2 and let ℓ be a positive multiple of 2,…,D. The roots will be (d!)−ℓ/d. Put

ij=r+jℓ (0≤j<D),N=r+(D−1)ℓ,αd=(d!)ℓ/d,
∏d=2D(αdX−1)=∑j=0D−1hjXj,A=∏d=2Dαd.

At index ij put the coefficient

cij=N!hjAij!,

and put every other coefficient equal to zero. We verify that these coefficients are integers and that V2=⋯=VD=0. For 2≤d≤D, divisibility of ℓ by d gives ⌊ij/d⌋=⌊r/d⌋+jℓ/d. Hence

Vd(c)=N!A(d!)⌊r/d⌋∑j=0D−1hjαd−j=0,

because αd−1 is a root of the displayed polynomial. Evaluating that polynomial at 1 gives M

M=N!∏d=2D(1−1/αd)>0.

For integrality, each term of hj/A is, up to sign, the reciprocal of a product of D−1−j distinct factors αd. In that denominator, each selected d contributes ℓ/d blocks of size d. The total size is (D−1−j)ℓ=N−ij, so the multinomial coefficient shows that this denominator divides N!/ij!. Thus every cij is an integer. Since hD−1=A, the coefficient at N is 1, and the coefficients have gcd one. This does not establish minimal support. The smallest permitted step is ℓ=lcm⁡(2,…,D); taking D=r=ℓ=2 recovers −6e2+e4.

The stronger divisibility

r!∏d=2D(ℓ/d)!∏d=2D(αd−1)∣M

follows because

N!r!A∏d=2D(ℓ/d)!

is an integer: it counts partitions into one distinguished block of size r and, for each d, an unordered collection of ℓ/d blocks of size d. Their sizes sum to N. Using M=(N!/A)∏d=2D(αd−1) now gives the asserted divisibility. Put v=max(r,ℓ/2), an integer since 2∣ℓ. The displayed factor divides M, so v!∣M. Since D≤ℓ≤2v and r≤v,

N=r+(D−1)ℓ≤4v2−v<4v2,v≥⌊N/2⌋+1.

Consequently (⌊N/2⌋+1)!∣M. Every positive integer q≤⌊N/2⌋+1 therefore divides M, as does every divisor of that factorial. In particular, N≥4(q−1)2 suffices for q∣M. This includes denominators growing with N.

The same vector also supplies the size estimate needed for a tail test. Every factor 1−1/αd lies strictly between 0 and 1, so 0<M<N! and

0<M(S−HN)<2M(N+1)!−1<2N,

where (N+1)!−1>NN! for N≥2. Thus the family supplies both eventual divisibility by each fixed q and the size condition M<(N+1)!−1, without an extra hypothesis. It does not yet compare this tail with the finite part’s gap to the next integer. Both may shrink together. Before studying that arithmetic question, we show why the cofactor formula gives the same primitive vectors.
