Lean statement

Information growth under repeated exact Gaussian observations

Lean is a language for mathematical statements and proofs that a computer can verify. This page shows one statement file from OpenAI’s release, possible paper matches and independent reports. The code-like names below identify the definitions or theorems selected by the proof-verification settings.

Theorems selected for verification: OAI.RepeatedLocalization.repeated_localization OAI.AllScaleInverseVolume.inverse_volume_without_support OAI.KernelPotential.kernel_coercivity OAI.KernelPotential.actual_row_drift

Lean statement file: GaussianInformation.leanShow on the mapOpenAI’s Lean catalogue does not list this as a main result; the release’s Lean notes for family 140 link it.

The Lean statement

The lines of the Lean statement that state the theorem, then the definitions in the file that it uses.

A Lean statement states the theorem and leaves its proof as sorry on purpose. OpenAI’s proof is in a separate solution module, and a program called Comparator checks that proof against this statement.

Possible paper match, with no recorded review

Atlas selected this possible match by comparing words in the Lean statement with every statement in the family. No review of whether the statements mean the same thing is recorded.

Words of the Lean statement, its names split into words, that also appear in the theorem: transcript, repeated, augmented, cells, level, localization, pi, experiment and four more. Found in the paper’s title, which its main theorem states: information and gaussian. Shared only with the release’s name for the Lean statement or OpenAI’s note on it: ct and nested.

Statements in Localization costs and information growth for exact Gaussian observations come first because the release’s name for this Lean statement shares words with that paper’s title.

Theorem 3.2 of Localization costs and information growth for exact Gaussian observations

Theorem (Repeated localization)

There is an absolute constant c>0 with the following property. For any fixed C_0>0, consider the experiment above with t\ge0 blocks and N\ge1 possible message values, and suppose

\bigl(2/m+e^{-ck}\bigr)\log N\le C_0d.

One can reveal nested dyadic cells Q_0\supset Q_1\supset\cdots\supset Q_t containing Z, where Q_i is a finite-valued measurable function of Z, the preceding revelations, and W_1,\ldots,W_i, so that the augmented transcript

\Pi_t=(W_1,Q_1,\ldots,W_t,Q_t)

satisfies

I(Z;\Pi_t)\le Cdt.

Here C is a constant depending only on C_0. If J_t is the level of Q_t, the construction also gives \E J_t\le Ct.

How Atlas selects possible matches: it compares words in the Lean statement with every statement in the family. It also splits Lean names into words. The release’s label and note receive less weight; a main theorem wins a close match. If the Lean wording yields no clear match, Atlas uses the catalogue description. This selects passages to compare; it does not establish that they mean the same thing.

Reported Comparator runs

two independent groups report that Comparator accepted runs for this Lean statement file: Carlos Toledo’s cert-machine; MathVet. Each group reports its own Comparator run for this statement file. Atlas has not repeated the runs.

For a configured theorem, Comparator tests whether OpenAI’s proof proves the exact Lean statement. Some files instead configure definitions for comparison by name and type. Acceptance does not establish that the statement means the same thing as the paper’s theorem.

Carlos Toledo’s cert-machine

How they ran it, in their words

Every Comparator challenge re-run on Linux with nanoda switched on, decided by a preregistered rule; every family’s challenge statements read against OpenAI’s headline, clause by clause. Decider: Comparator (leanprover/comparator d03acab1 = tag v4.34.0, built with the release’s toolchain v4.34.1), lean4export 076e8e57, landrun 811cfff5, nanoda_lib 3a240721 — on GitHub’s Linux runners (.github/workflows/openai-math-kernel.yml), one j…

  • Accepted Their term: “CERTIFIED”.

Re-run through Comparator with the independent nanoda kernel switched on: Lean’s kernel and nanoda both accept OpenAI’s solution.

Reported 10 October 2026, at the release version shown here. Original verification report

MathVet

How they ran it, in their words

An independent, model-assisted, pre-referee reading of each family’s challenge statements against its headline claim under a published rubric (PROTOCOL.md), with its own Comparator runs per challenge. Its protocol describes a planned error-rate study; this import does not establish that the study has been completed.

  • Accepted Their term: “comparator-sandboxed-pass”.

Re-run through Comparator in a sandboxed virtual machine: accepted.

Reported 8 October 2026, at the release version shown here. Original verification report

What an accepted Comparator run would establish

If Comparator is run under this configuration and accepts, the solution proves the configured theorem using only the allowed axioms, and the Lean kernel accepts every step.

This configuration lists no definition holes, so every definition the statement uses is compared as it is written in this file.

Allowed axioms: propext, Classical.choice, Quot.sound

Acceptance leaves open whether the Lean statement means the same thing as the paper’s theorem, whether the paper’s other claims are correct, and whether the result is new. Those questions require comparing the definitions and statements, reviewing the paper’s arguments, and reading the earlier literature.

Do family 140’s Lean statements express the advertised result?

These assessments compare all the family’s Lean statements with the whole result OpenAI describes in its catalogue. They do not assess this statement alone. Each group uses its own published rules.

MathVet and cert-machine agree on how much of the advertised result the Lean statements express.

  • MathVet

Finds the whole advertised result stated or implied Their term: “full”.

The challenge statements imply the headline claim after unpacking definitions or one routine step. Their record

Their note: None for the headline; supporting results are in separate files. The learner model gives the learner a free shared seed at every step (a stronger model, so the lower bound is stronger).

Definitions the group asks readers to compare with the paper: Bespoke finite-memory learner model (Learner, RunStatus, Admissible bundling several AEMeasurable hypotheses, angularError := arccos ⟪ŝ, s⟫, uniformSphere via Measure.toSphere); GaussianInformation.lean also introduces local instance ambientSub/ambientInner re-defining Sub/Inner on EuclideanSpace (supporting file)

  • Carlos Toledo’s cert-machine

Finds the whole advertised result stated or implied Their term: “MATCHES”.

The challenge statements state the headline as OpenAI wrote it. Their record

Read the complete assessments on the family page.

OpenAI’s own note on what this Lean statement covers

“The formalization controls information gained from exact Gaussian observations of a spherical image of the uniform cube. Under the stated entropy and size conditions, repeated localization over $t$ observation blocks produces nested disclosures with mutual information at most $C(n+1)t$ and expected final localization level at most $Ct$. The selected estimates include inverse-volume control, kernel coercivity, and drift for the actual observation rows.”

An AI agent drafted an interpretation of that note, classifying this statement as “states a paper’s theorem as the paper does”. No human review of the draft is recorded.

Memory and precision in noiseless Gaussian regression

Theorem (Memory and precision)

For every fixed finite A>0, there are constants c_A>0 and d_A such that the following holds. Let d\ge d_A, let 0\le M\le Ad^2 be an integer, and let 0<\epsilon\le1/10. For any learner in Definition h:model, draw S\sim\sigma_d independently of the rows and the learner’s data-independent randomness. If

\Prob\{\arccos\ip{\widehat s}{S}\le\epsilon\}\ge\frac23,

then its prescribed horizon satisfies

Theorem (Critical-radius comparison)

In the two experiments of Subsection subsec:r-two-experiments, use the dimensions (eq:r-critical-parameters). Thus S\sim\sigma, A\sim\gamma_m is independent of S, and W is countable with an arbitrary joint dependence on (S,A). The aligned law retains (S,A,W) and appends independent r-row C, whereas the independent law retains (S,W) and draws an independent \ell-row matrix G. If H(W)\le d^2, then, for an absolute constant K,

I_0(S;W\mid G,GS)\le I_1(S;W\mid G,GS)+Kd.

Theorem (Streaming consequence of the critical radius)

Let M(d) be a nonnegative integer sequence with M(d)=o(d^2), and let 0<\epsilon(d)\le1/10. For each d, consider a learner in Definition def:r-streaming-model with deterministic finite horizon T(d). If its uniform-sphere angular success probability, including all learner randomness, is at least 3/5, then

T(d)\ge c\,d\log\frac1{\epsilon(d)}

Subsphere methods for memory-sample lower bounds in noiseless Gaussian regression

Theorem (Explicit noiseless precision bound)

Let M:\mathbb N\to\mathbb Z_{\ge0} satisfy M(d)=o(d^2). There is a dimension threshold depending only on this memory sequence such that, for every larger d, every 0<\epsilon\le1/10, and every learner in Definition s:model, the following implication holds. If S is uniform on S^{d-1}, independently of the Gaussian rows and learner randomness, and

\Prob\{\arccos\ip{\widehat s}{S}\le\epsilon\}\ge\frac23,

then

T\ge 2^{-16}d\log_2(1/\epsilon).

Information growth under repeated exact Gaussian observations

Family 140: Memory–sample lower bounds for noiseless Gaussian regression
